EV Charger Installation

Workplace EV Charger Installation in Salisbury

A logistics company needed workplace charging at their second site in Salisbury, so a member of staff could charge at work rather than at home. The existing supply did not give a charge point adequate circuit protection, so we installed a separate consumer unit. The work qualified for a £500 grant under the Workplace Charging Scheme.

How the job went

  1. 1

    The brief

The installation was at the second site of a logistics company, for a member of staff who needed to charge at work rather than at home. A workplace charge point is assessed the same way as a domestic one. We look at the existing electrical installation on site before deciding what the charger can be connected to.

  2. 2

    What we found

The existing supply on site was not suitable and did not provide adequate circuit protection for a charge point. Working around that was not an option. A charge point needs its own correctly protected circuit whether it is going on a house or on a commercial building.

  3. 3

    What we did

We installed a separate consumer unit rather than working around what was already there, giving the charge point its own protection independent of the existing board. On a commercial site that also means the charger can be isolated without touching the circuits the business runs on day to day.

  4. 4

    Grant funding

The work was carried out under the Workplace Charging Scheme, so the company was eligible for a £500 grant towards the installation. The scheme is separate from the domestic chargepoint grant and is open to businesses. It is worth asking about if you are putting charge points in for staff or visitors.

  5. 5

    The result

The company has a 7kW tethered Zappi at its second site, on its own supply with its own protection, available to the member of staff who needed it. Because it does not share the existing board, it can be worked on or isolated without affecting the rest of the site.

The Workplace Charging Scheme grant reduced what the company paid towards the installation. We can assess a site and recommend a suitable EV charger installation for staff or company vehicles.
