Local Electricians Covering Alderbury And SP5

Alderbury is around four miles north of our base in Downton, just off the A36 on the edge of Salisbury, and is about as local to us as a job gets. It is a village that has grown in layers: older cottages and farm buildings at the core, a good deal of mid twentieth century housing around them, and newer infill since.

Those layers show up in the electrics. A house built in the 1960s that has been extended twice and had a board change somewhere along the way tends to have an installation nobody has assessed as a whole. It is rarely dangerous. It is frequently a muddle, and the muddle is what makes adding anything to it more involved than it looks.

We are NICEIC Approved Contractors and MCS Certified Installers, family-run since 2011. Being four miles away means we can come and test before quoting, which on a house that has been altered a few times is the only way to price it honestly.

What We Provide

Electrical Services We Provide In Alderbury

All carried out in house by our own electricians. Tell us the problem rather than the solution you think you need, and we will test before recommending anything.

Consumer Unit Upgrades In Alderbury

A consumer unit upgrade is the most common single job we are asked for locally, and it is worth being clear about what it does. A modern board brings the protective devices up to current standards and adds RCD protection across the circuits. It does not change the condition of the wiring behind it.

On a sound installation that is a sensible, proportionate upgrade and a good afternoon spent. On an installation with underlying problems, a new board can start tripping almost immediately, because modern protection detects faults the old board was never capable of seeing. That is not the new board failing. It is the new board doing its job.

So we test the circuits before quoting, not after fitting. If the wiring is sound we will fit a board and say so. If it is not, you will get the evidence and a realistic view of what the installation needs, and you can decide how far to go.

EV Charging And Solar On Local Housing

A lot of Alderbury housing suits home charging well: off-street parking, a garage or driveway close to the house, and in many cases a consumer unit modern enough to take a dedicated circuit without being replaced. Where that is the situation, the installation is genuinely straightforward and we will tell you so rather than finding reasons to make it bigger.

Our Downton case study is an example of exactly that: a modern board with a spare way, so the work went into the protection and the cable finish rather than into replacing anything.

If solar is on the horizon, say so at the assessment. Specifying the charge point so it can use surplus generation costs nothing now and is awkward to retrofit later, and the two working together is what actually moves your running costs.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you cover Alderbury?

Yes, and it is one of our closest areas. Alderbury is around four miles from our base in Downton and sits in SP5, the postcode area we are based in ourselves.

Do I need a new consumer unit?

Possibly, but it depends on the condition of the circuits behind it rather than the age of the board alone. We test first. If the wiring is sound, a board change is a sensible upgrade. If it is not, a new board will often start tripping straight away, because it detects faults the old one could not.

Why would a new fuse board keep tripping?

Almost always because it is doing its job. Modern protection is far more sensitive than older equipment, so faults that existed quietly for years become visible as soon as it is fitted. It is frustrating, but it is information rather than a fault with the new board, and it is exactly why we test circuits before quoting.

Can you add an EV charger without replacing the board?

Often yes. If the existing consumer unit is modern, has capacity and has a usable spare way, a charge point can usually be added to it with the correct protection. We check at the assessment stage and will tell you plainly if a board change is genuinely needed rather than assuming one.

Is a partial rewire ever enough?

Frequently, particularly on a house that has already been part rewired at some point. There is no merit in replacing sound cable. We test, identify which circuits are at the end of their life and quote for those, and you get the reasoning rather than a single number.

Do you do emergency call outs?

We work Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, and we focus on planned installation work rather than out of hours call outs. For anything urgent and unsafe, contact your network operator or an emergency electrician.

How do I get in touch?

The enquiry form on this site is quickest, or WhatsApp. You can also email or call us during working hours.
